A powerful earthquake in Papua New Guinea caused a great panic

Seventeen magnitude earthquake by Richter hit Papua New Guinea on Monday morning, but there is no data on victims today, the seismological service said.

Earthquake occurred early in the morning and no tsunami threats, the service said, suggesting that the earthquake was preceded by a few shudders.

“The earthquake has caused panic but there are no reports of harm or victims,” said spokeswoman for the National Disaster Management Service Sutopo Nugroho.

He added that the affected area was very inaccessible and that the agency could not accurately determine the damage until communication was re-established.
